“Rural Off-Grid Energy Kiosks” -
a pilot to identify a sustainable model for community electrification
CATEGORY 3 - PLEASE NOTE THAT THE APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS ELAPSED
OPEN TO: UNIVERSITIES, COLLEGES, ANY MALAWIAN INDIVIDUAL WITH SUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
TASK: DESIGN A PRACTICABLE OFF-GRID OR MINI-GRID SYSTEM TO ELECTRIFY A COMMUNITY OF 150 HOUSEHOLDS WITH A
TECHNOLOGY OR A MIX OF TECHNOLOGIES THAT HAVE ADVANTAGES IN COMPARISON TO IMPORTED SOLAR PV, ESPECIALLY
BEING MORE EASILY MAINTAINED AND REPLACED BASED ON LOCAL SOURCES.
Find the minimum power requirements for the current Energy Kiosks here (as a guiding reference only). The assumption is that for basic
electrification that meets the needs of people, each household should at least have access to enough power to light two 2W LED lights for
at least 4 hours per night, charge a mobile phone and run a radio daily. About 10% of the household are statistically higher income households
or small businesses and would prefer to be able to run a TV and DVD player as well. A health centre and school should have lights as well.
The APPLICATION FORMAT is not restricted, however the minimum requirements are:
- a clear outline of the idea, technologies used and how they generate power
- one or more drawings to visualize the system
- basic technical minimum specifications of the power generation and dissemination devices
- an inidcation of the generated power (peak and minimum) per day
- risks and mitigation potentials for the technologies used (and geographical/regional restrictions to use it within Malawi, if any)
- a list of materials needed to implement the system and, if possible, a rough estimate of total cost, divided in material, labour & other charges
(not including site-specific costs like transport)
- a one-page summary of each person involved in the entry with their specific role in this entry/idea and background/experience in
electrical works - this part will NOT be judged or used as a basis for entry evaluation but only gives us an overview of the compe titors
Entries were evaluated by a panel of community development professionals, scientists, policymakers and energy practitioners.
Only original entries are accepted.
Through their participation, participants acknowledge that their name and picture may be published by RENAMA and the project
consortium partners and that the presented idea can be considered and developed on as a basis for further pilot projects. Successful
participants may be invited to contribute and/or be involved personally in further rural electrification projects if it is in their interest.
