Renewable Energy Alternative Demonstration Yard
(READY for future...)
In these demonstration centres which we’d like to set up in several communities in many regions of Malawi, it’s all about
awareness raising and hands-on-learning available for all community members. Looking at the urgent need in a rising number
of households to explore alternatives for cooking and lighting due to exploding costs for and increased scarcity of woodfuels
and parrafin, and the fact that in several areas families already face situations in which they can’t cook food at times because
of this, the demand for these centres is immense.
The “READY” centres are open for all interested people. Each centre will also seek funds to facilitate visits of school classes,
teachers, students, development workers and village groups from further away to multiply the knowledge transfer opportunities.
Traning sessions will take place several times per month on different days, so that people of different backgrounds and working
hours can take part. Specifically trained local READY guides first facilitate their own identification of the cause-result-chain of
woodfuel use, deforestation, climate change and their related impacts on everybody’s lives.
With this broadened horizon, participants are then introduced to possible alternatives which are displayed at different stations
at the centre, and finally guided to try out cooking a meal on these alternative devices themselves in small groups. In seperate
workshops, interested people can learn more on the manufacturing of those devices which can be locally produced, e.g. simple
solar cookers & solar dryers, insulation baskets or biomass briquettes.
