Recycle (Biomass) Briquettes
Biomass briquettes are a potential replacement for charcoal which can be made from an abundance of recycle materials
through mechanical compression of organic waste. Depending on the materials used, the grade of compression and some
other factors, heating value and duration of burning can be achieved which are comparable or even higher than charcoal
without cutting trees, and even without emitting the same poisonous smokes and sooth.
The materials used for recycle biomass briquetted vary greatly with the availability of biomass waste products in the
respective region and community where it is made.
The most commonly used raw materials in Malawi up to now are waste papers, tobacco leaves, sawdust, elephant dung,
banana leaves and other dry plant fibres.
Despite their good potential to become a cost-efficient and sustainable source of energy which can empower local
entrepreneurship while contributing to waste management problem as well, biomass briquettes are hardly known and
spread in Malawi yet, though some initiatives as well as Government have become more aware of it in recent years.
